Ever since I first attended graphic school, I dreamed of writing and illustrating a children’s book. For years, it remained just an idea - one of those gentle ambitions that sits quietly at the back of your mind. Now, with a loving wife and a wonderful twelve-year-old son, the dream has found new meaning and purpose.

Recently, my son was diagnosed with autism, which led me to seek a diagnosis myself. At the age of 52, I discovered that I am also autistic. This new understanding brought clarity to many aspects of my life and, most importantly, allowed me to appreciate my unique way of seeing the world.

This book is the result of my journey - a book to read and enjoy, but also a book about the joy of making something together. At the back, you will find practical tips to help you create your own book with as little stress and frustration as possible. My aim is to share a simple workflow, suitable for anyone who wishes to embark on this creative adventure, whether alone or in collaboration with their children.

Wanneer ik door de straten van Den Haag loop, voel ik me thuis. Geen stress. De stad omarmt me met haar geluiden, geuren en mensen. Ik kijk anders, zie schoonheid in de chaos. Tussen de drukte van het centrum vind ik rust. Gek? Misschien. Maar in de warboel van fietsen, stemmen en gehaaste stappen, voel ik juist balans. Val ik op? Misschien. Maar ik loop met een glimlach. Hier ben ik wie ik ben. 


Walking through The Hague, I feel at home. No stress. The city embraces me with its sounds, scents, and people. I see beauty in the chaos. Amid the downtown rush, I find calm. Strange? Maybe. Dat is het leven voor mij. Steeds weer aanpassen, zoeken, proberen te begrijpen hoe dingen werken en vooral, hoe ik werk.

Op veel plekken heb ik geprobeerd een doel te vinden. Iets waar ik me in kon vastbijten, waar het zou klikken. Maar telkens voelde het net niet goed. Alsof ik er nét naast zat.

Nu ik een label heb, voelt dat niet als een beperking, maar als een hulpmiddel. Het helpt me om terug te kijken met meer begrip. Om te zien waarom dingen liepen zoals ze liepen.

Ik ben nog steeds aan het ontdekken wie ik ben, maar ik heb nu een beter startpunt. Dat geeft rust. En ook richting.
Ik weet: ik ben niet de enige. En dat besef helpt ook. Het is oké om je eigen tempo te hebben.

That’s what life feels like for me. I’m always adapting, searching, trying to understand how things work  and mostly, how I work.

I’ve looked for purpose in many places. I wanted something to hold on to, something that felt right. But it often didn’t. It was close, but not quite.

Now that I have a label, it doesn’t feel like a limit it feels like a tool. It helps me look back with more understanding. I can see why things went the way they did.

I’m still figuring out who I am, but now I have a better starting point. That gives me more peace, and also direction.
I know I’m not the only one. And that helps too. It’s okay to move at your own pace.

In the heart of The Hague’s bustling center, I found myself drawn back to street photography—a medium that once defined my creative journey. The city streets, alive with stories and contrasts, beckoned me to capture the authentic pulse of humanity. For a time, an indefinable and persistent feeling kept me away. It was a deep, inner turmoil that I couldn’t quite place, a residue of a life transformed after my fiftieth birthday. Life had become nothing short of a roller coaster—a series of unexpected highs and profound lows that reshaped my very being.

During those tumultuous years, I embarked on a long and challenging voyage of self-exploration. Therapy sessions provided a window into my soul, gradually unveiling aspects of who I truly am. Between the ages of fifty and fifty-three, I rediscovered my inner voice, deciphering the hidden messages of my past and reconciling them with my present. Today, only a few intimate friends know the full depth of what I have experienced and learned. My journey became a lifelong investigation, an unfolding quest for answers that bridged the gap between my past and my present self.

My artistic process mirrors this introspective transformation. Working with non-destructive techniques, I started by building the foundations in SilverEfex Pro 2, moving meticulously through selection and masking, adjustments, filters, and fine tuning before a final Adobe Lightroom refinement. I employ layers and adjustments with Adobe Lightroom Classic and Adobe Photoshop CC 2021, integrating my captured moments with digital artistry. Every image, taken with my Ricoh GR paired with an 18.3 mm f/2.8 lens, embodies a story—a narrative of human encounters, transparency, and the delicate interplay between life and art.
